Test Yourself: Can you tell which is a 3D image and which is Real?

The real world and virtual world are gradually blurring together. Fooling the human mind into not being able to separate these two worlds is still a challenge because our brains are pretty hard wired to spot incredibly subtle details that allow us to identify the fakes from reality, especially when computer graphics are in motion. At some point in the not too distant future it is likely that we will not be able to tell. Can we really trust what our eyes are telling us?

Spotting the difference is harder with still images. Can you tell which ones of these are real and which are fake*? Answers at the bottom or on rollover.

I got 2 wrong – 1 and 8. I got thrown with 1 because renders so often include unnecessarily reflective curvy objects and impossibly detailed environments and are brightly lit, and 8 because the shot is so beautifully lit, it looks surreal.

3 is fake because the skin on the forehead isn’t right.
4 is fake because the chair looks like it’s ‘floating’ and also, the legs are too reflective.
6 is fake because the eyes and mouth are just that little bit wrong. Also, the curly hair coming down to her shoulders is too perfect.
9 is fake because the inside of the lower eyelid and eyeball are wrong (no blood veins in the eye, same reason #2 is real) and the hair seems to float away from the head too much.
10 is just obviously fake. The flat white windows are a dead giveaway, and the lighting of the scene is wrong. The perfect tires with no treads, and the impossible floor are also deal breakers.

    Great set guys! I love nit-picking 😀
