BBC sets the benchmark for broadcast web tv

27 July 2007 is the launch date for the BBC iPlayer. As soon as a show is broadcast it will be available for download and can be played for a week. Important note is that this is application based, not web – which is interesting given the release of Adobe Air and Microsoft Silverlight which both centre around desktop web experiences. The iPlayer will only be available for UK TV license payers at launch.

BBC iPlayer is currently in closed environment testing amongst some 15,000 people. It will go live to the general public in open Beta on 27 July, allowing the number of users to increase over the summer in a controlled manner, before a full marketing launch in the autumn.
